Description of CROQUET by Keith Khan

With its slightly trippy perspective that evokes a scene from Alice in Wonderland, this image suggests a particularly English eccentricity. It is curious and refreshing to see a group of naked athletes playing a heritage sport that might seem relatively sedate. The entire team seems focused on the key player as he gets ready to swing his mallet, creating a moment that cuts through any perceived whimsy to reflect the intensity of sport for both participants and spectators.

Selected from the MASSED BODIES section of our Seeing Men Exhibition

The spectacular and imposing photographs in this section have their roots in traditional group portraiture, from sports teams to schoolmates. However, where such group photographs typically reflect their simple documentary function, these images capture more elusive yet profound connections to dramatic effect.

The subjects have stepped in front of the camera together, naked, to support of the values and aspirations of the project. They are ordinary men, silently yet viscerally and irrevocably asserting their solidarity with a cause. Views of otherwise unassuming athletes posing together naked for group portraiture make these images feel incredibly special.
