We recently released a documentary film about the different experiences of men and women at the 2024 World Naked Bike Ride in London. (You can find this film in the June 2024 edition of ROAR Portfolio.) It got all of us at Barefoot Man thinking about how men could offer women greater support in what remains a patriarchal world. Every day, women deal with objectification in ways that men struggle to understand.
Tackling the dominance of what is known as the ‘straight male gaze’ has been at the heart of our work since the very first Warwick Rowers calendar. We recognise that there are other ways of looking at the world, at women – and of course at men!
Building on our history since 2009 and taking on board our recent learning at WNBR, we can now unveil our boldest initiative yet: Barefoot Blades. This innovative programme aims to transform athletic men of all ages into body-painted, naked rollerbladers who will dazzle and engage crowds at World Naked Bike Rides around the globe.
Imagine educated, empathetic and supportive men gliding naked through the streets to support gender equality and freedom from homophobia, misogyny and patriarchal heteronormativity.
What is a “Blade”?
A “blade” is a sharp, keen, and possibly dangerous or daring man. This person is skilful, confident, and perhaps a bit edgy. They exude speed, skill and precision, qualities that are perfectly aligned with the men we are cultivating for Barefoot Blades.
Drawing Inspiration from the WNBR
Our inspiration for Barefoot Blades comes from our recent experience with WNBR London, which we covered in a documentary film in our previous issue of Portfolio. This celebration of body positivity, environmental awareness, and freedom of expression also gave us a call to action: men need to do more to address the objectification of women in our culture.
By incorporating rollerblading into these rides, we can add a layer of dynamism and interaction that relates specifically to equality of life chances regardless of gender or sexuality, enhancing the overall experience for both participants and spectators.
Learning from Luxury
In creating Barefoot Blades, we are borrowing tropes from the world of luxury brands. Think of high-end fashion shows where every detail is meticulously planned and executed. Our rollerbladers will be more than athletes; they will be performers and ambassadors of a lifestyle that blends athleticism, artistry, and audacity.
The Barefoot Blades Training Programme
The Barefoot Blades initiative is a skills-based opportunity primarily targeted at athletes of all ages. They will be required to complete a comprehensive training program in advance of their participation. This will include both practical and theoretical components. Participants will master the art of rollerblading as well as learning the nuances of engaging with the public in a supportive, socially conscious manner.
Our “blades” will be a striking presence at WNBR events, circulating naked among the crowds at starting and finishing points, accompanying rides and providing a dynamic visual element to the event.
Body Art and Social Media Engagement
Each participant will be adorned with body paint featuring supportive, social media-friendly images. These designs will not only enhance their visual appeal but also promote messages of positivity and awareness.
Our blades will be trained to offer supportive interventions to anyone feeling objectified or uncomfortable. Their presence will ensure a safe, respectful, and inclusive atmosphere. They will be ready to pose for selfies and be filmed, creating captivating content for Barefoot Man’s social media channels.
Engaging the Public
Some of our blades will also reach out as interviewers, ready to facilitate conversations, capturing the essence of the event for our cameras. This interaction is key to creating a more immersive and engaging experience.
